Why Karate?

Through serious martial arts practice, you can learn to face yourself strictly and show your best spirit in all situations. Each of us can become mentally and physically stronger. In this instance, 'Strong' does not mean throwing your weight about. It means being a more strict with yourself.

There is also the aspect of learning how to defend oneself.  Although by learning Shotokan Karate you will learn how to defend yourself, martial arts are practiced more for completeness of body and mind rather than for aggression.

Who Can Learn Karate?

Everyone! Regardless of age, sex, current physical condition or experience.  You can begin or continue your karate practice and enjoy it with Beckenham Shotokan Karate Club.

Will I Get Hurt?

Tying the belt
Tying the Obi (belt)

As with all martial arts and physical activities, there is a possibility of your hurting yourself.  Shotokan Karate is primarily a 'non-contact' form of karate, therefore the chances of being hurt whilst sparring is lessened considerably.  Following your karate teacher's instructions will further lessen the possibility of harm.
